Every ServiceNow freelancer knows the feeling: you land a mission that seems perfect. The project is strategic, the clients are collaborative, and a sense of mutual trust makes everything feel like it’s going to run smoothly. For the most part, it does.

But sometimes, things go wrong.

The tone shifts, not with a sudden bang, but through a series of weak signals and unilateral decisions made far from the project’s front lines. A promising engagement can quickly devolve into a stressful, high-stakes dispute.

This post shares the true story of a ServiceNow freelancer from the N2 Help & Solutions community who faced this exact situation. It’s a real-world case study in how to navigate a contractual conflict, with names changed to protect confidentiality. These are the hard-won lessons that can help you protect your business, your rights, and your peace of mind.

A contract isn’t a formality, it’s your protection

It’s easy to treat a contract as a simple administrative step, especially when the initial interactions with a client are positive and encouraging. We often focus on the exciting work ahead and skim the legal boilerplate, assuming good faith will carry the day.

The freelancer in this story, however, quickly identified serious imbalances in the contract he received. These weren’t minor typos; they were fundamental issues, including a disproportionate non-compete clause, a one-sided confidentiality agreement, and a glaring absence of any clause for prior mediation in case of a dispute. In total, he flagged seventeen unbalanced points that put him at a significant disadvantage. This early diligence was the first and most critical step in defending his position.

Based on his experience, here is some actionable advice for reviewing any freelance contract:

Read every single clause, especially those on termination, non-compete, and confidentiality.

Insist on realistic notice periods that match the project’s duration and complexity.

Don’t be afraid to request adjustments; a contract is a negotiation, not a decree.

Always get a second opinion from a trusted peer, mentor, or legal expert.

“When you get caught up in a project that seems to be off to a good start, it’s easy to forget that a contract isn’t just a formality: it’s a form of protection. And while trust is invaluable, it should never replace prudence.”

The formal notice of default

When communication breaks down and a client refuses to address serious contract issues, freelancers can feel powerless. But there is a powerful, structured step you can take that doesn’t necessarily require hiring a lawyer: issuing a formal notice of default.

This is a formal letter that officializes your complaint and demands action. Contrary to popular belief, you can write and send one yourself. It simply needs to contain three key elements:

A clear statement of what the other party has done wrong (e.g., failed to provide a balanced and corrected contract).

A clear demand for a specific action or correction.

A reasonable deadline for them to comply (typically 8 to 15 days).

The author’s professionalism was met with intransigence. After sending a detailed email on June 25th requesting changes, he received a clear refusal from the client’s president on June 30th. Wasting no time, he acted on his prior warning: on July 1st, he sent a formal notice by registered mail to officially suspend his services until the contract was corrected. This single, methodical step transformed a stalled email chain into an official dispute, forcing a high-level meeting within 48 hours.

Listen to the weak signals before they become a crisis

Major disputes rarely appear out of thin air. They are almost always preceded by subtle changes in behavior and communication.

As the mission progressed, the author began noticing several of these signals. Key contacts who were once readily available suddenly had less time. The frequency of direct, collaborative exchanges diminished. The final warning sign was a sudden change in the project’s direction, announced without any prior discussion or explanation.

Paying attention to these shifts is crucial.

They are your early warning system. Noticing them allows you to become proactive instead of reactive. You can start documenting exchanges more meticulously, ask clarifying questions to get things in writing, and mentally prepare for potential issues before being caught completely off guard.

Never accept a verbal promise over a written clause

During a tense negotiation, a client may resort to a high-pressure tactic: asking you to sign a flawed contract now with the verbal promise of fixing it later with an amendment.

This is exactly what happened during the contract review meeting.

The client’s president, “Vector” repeatedly tried to get the author to sign the existing, unbalanced contract, assuring him they could sort out the details in a future amendment.

The author’s response was simple and unwavering: he refused.

He calmly but firmly insisted that all agreed-upon changes be integrated into the contract before he would sign it. When the client attempted to evade certain points, he actively steered the conversation back to the essential task of correcting the contract.

This was a critical moment.

A verbal promise is not contractually binding, and had he given in, he would have lost all leverage. His refusal to accept words over written clauses was essential to protecting his interests.

Your strongest asset is your network

Facing a client dispute can be an incredibly isolating experience. It’s easy to feel like it’s you against the world, which can lead to self-doubt and costly mistakes.

This freelancer immediately understood the power of community.

Before formally responding to the client, he consulted with his network, including friends who were company directors, senior managers, lawyers, and legal experts. Their objective feedback was crucial; it helped him move beyond a subjective ‘gut feeling’ and objectify the contract’s imbalances, turning his concerns into a structured, defensible position.

Furthermore, he included representatives from N2 Help & Solutions in all his communications with the client.

Although N2 had no contractual link to the client, they acted as crucial mediators, helping to clarify roles, lower tensions, and provide moral support. This story is a powerful testament to the directive’s core message: you are not alone. When you face challenges, lean on your professional community for advice, perspective, and support.

Be attentive, not paranoid

The goal of sharing this experience isn’t to make freelancers cynical or to suggest that every client relationship is a potential battle. It is to arm you with awareness and empower you with prudence.

Being a successful independent professional requires balancing trust with vigilance. You can and should build positive, collaborative relationships with clients, but that should never come at the expense of protecting yourself with a fair and balanced contract.

“This is not about becoming suspicious, but about becoming attentive.”

As you move forward, remember the lessons from this real-world story:

What is one small step you can take today to check that your current contracts truly protect you?

Whether it’s seeking a second opinion, clarifying a vague clause, or simply rereading an old agreement, taking proactive steps is always the right move.

And remember, communities like N2 Help & Solutions exist to foster a culture of prevention over cure, providing the support and guidance you need for exactly these situations.

Since then, he has been actively participating in the life of our community.

Who are you, where are you from and how did you start your journey as a freelancer?

I am French and I am based in the north of France. I have worked in different ESN between Nantes, Paris and Lille for about ten years before deciding to become freelance. I am currently starting my fourth year as a freelancer. This desire for independence was notably made possible thanks to Romain and Xavier, my former bosses, who believed in my project and gave me all the keys to best launch my activity.

How did you hear about N2, and since you joined, what are the main benefits you’ve seen?

I had the opportunity to work with Christophe Girdal for several years, first as a technical project leader, and then in the ServiceNow team. Christophe was already part of the collective, he told me about it and that’s how I was able to join the collective. The greatest strength of N2 Help & Solutions, is having allowed me to meet amazing people around common projects and realizing that we often shared the same values and the same desire to share.

Can you share a concrete experience of a project or collaboration you’ve experienced within the N2 community?

I was able to collaborate with N2 to establish a link with Deloitte and thus allow freelancers to work on major associated projects. We also had the opportunity to participate in the World Forum 2023 in Las Vegas with Antoine, my partner, and to meet other members of the network, such as Michel Conter from Einar & Partners. More recently, I am trying to give my vision of freelancing and my business for future projects.

What makes the N2 community different from other freelance networks?

N2’s defining feature is the shared values among its members. This not only promotes a harmonious work environment, but also enhances our collective output by fostering understanding and respect for diverse viewpoints.

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining the N2 community?

It is essential to come with the desire to contribute because the community cannot exist without our daily participation. Even if we don’t have the opportunity to collaborate immediately, it is still important to create links for our future projects.

Since 2020, N2 Help & Solutions has gathered more than 50 freelance experts in ESM (enterprise service management) and ServiceNow from around the world. In addition to offering a collective work structure, N2 offers its members, called “players”, a different perspective. This difference is expressed in our vision:

We build communities and solve problems. For us, technology is not an end in itself, but a simple tool to better meet the needs of our players. We believe in innovation, entrepreneurship, loyalty, and diversity. We are different by nature. We believe in the transformative potential of the world of work and help those who wish to embark on the adventure to try the experience.

Since August 2023, to develop this vision, we have started in-depth work on the definition of a freelance collective. We asked ourselves questions such as:

Why can freelancers choose to come together?

What are the elements that will support freelancers within the collective?

What can make one collective more attractive than another?

Thanks to what tools and services can a freelance collective self-manage and enjoy investing in community life?

In seeking to answer these questions, we discovered that an intangible element brings together all the ServiceNow and ESM experts who have chosen to join us. Without exception, they all share common values that they say they find within the N2 collective.

In order to make these values, which seem to gather our players, more concrete, we decided to build a charter of values for the N2 Help & Solutions collective. This kind of constitution materializes our common points while further defining this “safe place”, so dear to the vision of the two co-founders of the collective, Nicolas Delaby and Nicolas Hoffman.

Four months later, following numerous interviews with members of the collective, Myriam Allouche, our Human Resources specialist, and Yanina Trubchanka, intercultural mediation consultant and certified coach, proposed eight key values to us. These values will serve as the basis for the continuous development of our community from early 2024. We firmly believe that this common foundation, combined with our recruitment process and the certification of our members’ skills, will greatly help to distinguish N2 Help & Solutions from all other existing IT freelancer collectives.

Collective of freelancers: common values as the basis of collective identity

What is a collective of freelancers?

It’s much more than a simple reorganization of work. Indeed, by combining the advantages of a traditional company with the flexibility of freelancing, the collective offers maximum value to its members and their clients. It facilitates the rapid launch of new projects and highlights the high expertise of its members. Freelancers, thanks to the collective, can quickly form a team to meet specific needs.

In this constantly evolving context that often exceeds legal limits, we have considered building a foundation that would serve as a guide for working together. It’s an identity, a kind of DNA of the collective where everyone can find themselves, regardless of their job, their region of the world, or the language they speak.

After all, we spend about 80,000 hours at work in a lifetime! It seemed important to us to enhance this shared time with a common code that we can refer to if necessary.

Often in the freelance world, the main goal is financial expansion, navigating between competition stakes. However, does everything boil down to this financial performance? At N2 Help & Solutions, we challenge this theory, considering it too simplistic and reductive for freelancers.

To express this collective identity in a more lively and effective way to those who would like to join us, we have developed the N2 values charter, our own compass. We have all collaborated, collective members, support team and intercultural mediator, to give life to this compass. Thus was born the N2 charter, guiding towards shared values and ethics that we all apply in our mutual interactions and with our clients.

The 8 key values of the N2 Help & Solutions collective

1. Respect for each other

Every member of the N2 collective respects the religious, cultural, and ideological convictions of other players, clients, and partners, even if they differ from their own. They respect every player’s right to freedom of speech.

2. Be professional

We are all responsible for our own work and results, committing to take action to achieve both individual and collective goals. To remain competitive, our collective seeks to develop cutting-edge practices allowing us to respond to market demand changes and offer innovative solutions.

3. Bet on Mutual Support

We are bound by solidarity, mutual support, and cooperation, committing to working together. We encourage regular and constructive feedback to help improve the performance of each member of the collective and the collective as a whole. This value elevates our performance and expertise with clients through continuous skill improvement.

4. Get involved in Collegiality

We make every effort to promote collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork within the N2 collective. On a daily basis, we create a working environment where collective members collaborate harmoniously, share knowledge and skills, and work together to achieve the goals of different projects. With this value, we aim to establish a positive working environment where collective members feel valued, engaged, and connected to each other. Together, we contribute to the decisions made within our collective .

5. Be Confident and Inspire Trust

Essential to the smooth functioning of our collective, trust is demonstrated through loyalty, honesty, and kindness towards each of us. We must exchange in good faith and with a spirit respectful of everyone’s expectations, whether it be with other members, external partners, suppliers, or clients. We commit to communicating transparently and sharing relevant information regularly with all members of the collective.

6. Seek to Innovate, Learn, and Initiate

This value emphasises innovation by encouraging members to develop new ideas, take initiatives, and experiment with new approaches. It can also enhance the productivity and creativity of the organisation by encouraging diversity in ideas and perspectives. We aim to establish a learning culture within the collective so that ideas are seen as opportunities for discoveries, and mistakes as opportunities for learning. In doing so, we want learning to be at the centre of our activities so that we can draw lessons from our daily experiences.

7. Give and Take Responsibility

We value taking and sharing responsibilities within our collective. Encouraging members to take responsibility and accept the outcome of their actions is a cornerstone of our culture. This approach not only fosters a culture of responsibility but also increases commitment. Our integrity is part of our commitments. It remains embedded in our approaches, whether we seize exciting opportunities or take responsibility when things don’t go as planned. We accept full responsibility for our commitments and we are determined to empower others with the means and trust they need to fulfil their commitments.

8. Act as Ambassadors for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging

We believe that diversity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging are essential for creating a dynamic and fulfilling environment. Our commitment to these principles goes beyond mere statements and is manifested in our daily actions.

In addition to these 8 keys values, we add two more very important points to our charter :

Work on Unconscious Biases (quick judgments lacking impartiality and objectivity for or against a person, group, or idea): We acknowledge that these judgments can influence our decisions and interactions. We have implemented awareness and training programs aimed at identifying and reducing these biases. By understanding and working on our own prejudices, we promote an environment where everyone is treated fairly and has the opportunity to thrive. This approach is already integrated into our recruitment process.

Multicultural Sourcing: To ensure an objective evaluation of candidates, we have instituted a dual-approval approach. Each candidate is met by two evaluators from different cultures and backgrounds. This approach ensures that our recruitment decisions are informed by a variety of perspectives, contributing to better decision-making and the promotion of diversity within our collective. We firmly believe that inclusion and diversity strengthen our collective and stimulate our creativity. As ambassadors of these values, we constantly strive to go beyond words to create an environment where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to bring out their best.

Practical application of values in the N2 Collective

We place the human at the center of our functioning.

With the upcoming implementation of the Ethic Lab, a new autonomous body meant to support and accompany each freelancer in their professional journey, we wish to guarantee this foundation of collective values.

Our goal is to respond in an innovative and agile way to the specific needs of our members, with a focus on resolving disputes with peers or clients. We firmly believe that the success of our collective depends on effective human relations management. That’s why we strive to identify and share “best practices” to enrich everyone’s experience. By adopting this approach, we commit to promoting the continuous growth of our collective.

Christophe Girdal is one of our very first members. He joined our ServiceNow and ESM freelance collective in 2020. Since then, more than 50 other consultants have followed him. Learn about his profile through this interview:

Who are you, where are you from and how did you start your journey as a freelancer?

I am French and I live in the north of France. I have completed an engineering training in computer science with a specialization in networks. Until 2013, I worked successively as an employee of an IT services company and an “end-user” company of IT. This allowed me to gain experience both in providing IT services and in consuming these same services.

During these experiences, especially as an employee of a services company, I always felt the desire to be my own boss and offer my services as an independent contractor. However, I thought I did not have the necessary criteria for success in this field such as experience, a distinctive specialization, and a network of contacts. Until 2013, when I decided to take the plunge, taking advantage of a desire to open a new chapter in my professional life and a great opportunity that presented itself.

How did you hear about N2, and since you joined, what are the main benefits you’ve seen?

In 2020, as I was considering a mission change, I was connected with Nicolas Delaby. We had a conversation, and Nicolas told me about N2, its concept, and its values. I quickly felt aligned with his description and therefore joined the collective.

Thanks to N2, I have access to numerous ServiceNow experts who are ready to answer my questions about the modules I am less familiar with, in order to better serve my clients. I am no longer alone! I now have dozens of experts by my side, ready to provide me with their help, experience, advice, and share mission opportunities in many countries.

Can you share a concrete experience of a project or collaboration you’ve experienced within the N2 community?

For the past two years, I have been working on ServiceNow projects for North American clients through a Canadian company that N2 connected me with.

What makes the N2 community different from other freelance networks?

Our values of mutual aid and sharing.

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining the N2 community?

If you are simply looking for a mission provider, look no further. If you want to become a member of a collective of experts who share values of mutual aid, sharing, efficiency, quality, and prioritize service, then hesitate no more and join us.

Who are you, where are you from and how did you start your journey as a freelancer?

My name is Azza Mrabet. I am originally from Tunisia but I have been living in France for over 15 years. I am a computer science engineer and I have a 3-year-old boy. After gaining experience in various IT companies, I made the decision to become a freelancer for two main reasons: to have a flexible work schedule and the ability to work remotely from any location. My first client was a consulting firm in Québec, Canada.

How did you hear about N2, and since you joined, what are the main benefits you’ve seen?

About a year ago, Nicolas Delaby reached out to me on LinkedIn regarding a project with N2 in Luxembourg. I was drawn to his vision of creating a community of freelancers where we can collaborate, support one another, and share knowledge.

Can you share a concrete experience of a project or collaboration you’ve experienced within the N2 community?

I am currently working on a ServiceNow project for a bank in Luxembourg. It is a transformation project that aims to change the mindset of several departments within the bank.

What makes the N2 community different from other freelance networks?

Transparency and knowledge sharing set N2 apart from other freelance networks. Personally, I feel supported and know that if I have any doubts or need advice, I can rely on good support.

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining the N2 community?

By joining N2 Help & Solutions, you’ll become part of a community of freelancers who will support and motivate you throughout your journey. For more information, it would be best to reach out to Myriam Allouche, N2 people manager, and have a chat with her.

Christopher is one of more than 50 freelance consultants who are experts in ServiceNow & ESM and currently comprise the N2 Help & Solutions collective. Learn about his profile through this interview:

Who are you, where are you from and how did you start your journey as a freelancer?

My name is Christopher Crefcoeur, and I am originally from Belgium. I decided to become a freelancer when I had no other option but to leave my previous company, which was relocating to Denmark. They would not offer me a decent salary for the move, and I could not find a job onsite.

I asked a good friend to investigate internally at his bank if they needed someone to work remotely as a freelancer. It turned out they were looking for a Technical Lead on ServiceNow and were accepting freelancers through another company. That’s how I became a freelancer.

It was during the Covid pandemic, and I think it helped me. Since everyone was working remotely, being a freelancer working remotely didn’t make any difference.

How did you hear about N2, and since you joined, what are the main benefits you’ve seen?

I had a discussion with Nicolas Delaby on LinkedIn and he asked me if I would like to join their team. The team has great ideas to revolutionize the way freelancers work together to achieve greater results for their customers. The collaborative spirit is definitely a key value at N2.

Can you share a concrete experience of a project or collaboration you’ve experienced within the N2 community?

We are establishing a legal entity to better serve our customers who rely on our community. I have participated in discussions with lawyers and advisers. We know what we want and how to achieve it.

What makes the N2 community different from other freelance networks?

Honesty and transparency are key values for this community. We are not here to enrich a select few individuals, but rather to improve our work lives while better serving our customers.

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining the N2 community?

Join and see by yourself, it is free 😉

When Nico and I first started out, we were like any other entrepreneurs : We had a growing customer base, but we were struggling to keep track of everything.

Our approach was scattered, with online spreadsheets and slides serving as our primary organization tools. It wasn’t long before we realized we needed a more efficient and streamlined way to manage our business.

That’s when we decided to build our own solution. We knew we needed tools to help us succeed, but nothing existed that met our specific needs. With our combined knowledge of ServiceNow, we got to work on a free development instance. It wasn’t easy, with the constraints of the environment and no guarantees that we could keep our platform. But we persisted, encoding real data into our solution and iterating as we went along.

It was a tricky process, especially since Nico had a million ideas per second and we had to narrow down what was actually useful. But that’s how we worked together – coming up with ideas, trying them out, and making conclusions to move forward. Eventually, our application began to take shape and we were able to manage all aspects of our business in one place.

The birth of Nitrogen

our recruitment flow on ServiceNow

So in order to improve our homemade solution, we decided to meet for just half an hour every day to try and stay organized, but even that wasn’t enough. We needed a better solution. So we turned to ServiceNow, a platform we knew well, and started building our own tool.

Despite the challenges, our application started to take shape. We were able to manage our business leads, missions, results, players, skills, and certifications all in one place. But we knew we needed to find a way to make it more secure and sustainable.

That’s when we started to explore integrating our platform with a ledger or blockchain. And that’s also when we met Nicola Attico, who believed in our ideas and offered to help us become official beta testers for his connector with Hedera. We knew that becoming true ServiceNow customers was the only way to make this happen, so we took the leap and never looked back. And Nitrogen was born.

Public Showcase

In November 2022, a few weeks after becoming official ServiceNow customers, Nico and I were invited to present our business case publicly at the ServiceNow forum in Brussels. This was a great opportunity for us to showcase Nitrogen and share our story with a wider audience.

During the event, we demonstrated our recruitment process, which included the use of NFTs as membership cards for new players. The audience was impressed with our use of cutting-edge technology and the innovative ways we were using ServiceNow to manage our business.

The public showcase was a huge success and helped us to gain even more traction in the industry. It was a great validation of all the hard work that we had put into developing Nitrogen, and it gave us the confidence to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible with ServiceNow and blockchain technology.

Looking back, we are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our platform and share our vision with the world. We believe that our model has the potential to revolutionize the way that businesses manage their operations, and we are excited to continue developing it in the years to come.

Conclusion

The story of Nitrogen is a testament to the power of innovation and the impact that technology can have on businesses. What started as a scattered and disorganized approach to managing customers and operations, quickly evolved into a cutting-edge platform that leverages the best of ServiceNow and blockchain technology.

The journey to building Nitrogen was not without its challenges, but Nico and I remained committed to our vision and never gave up. We believed in the potential of our platform, and we were determined to bring it to life.

Today, Nitrogen is a thriving platform that is helping us to manage our operations more efficiently and effectively. It is a true example of what can be achieved when innovation meets determination and perseverance.

As we look to the future, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for our developing community. We believe that there is still so much potential for growth and development, and we are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with ServiceNow and Hedera decentralized technology.

We hope that our story has inspired others to take risks and pursue their dreams, even in the face of uncertainty and adversity. We believe that with the right mindset and a willingness to embrace new technologies and ideas, anything is possible.

What do you think of the “Expert” section of our website?

It displays the NFTs of certified members of the N2 community. Through these NFTs, they are officially members of our decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). If you don’t know yet, N2 is a global community of over 50 ServiceNow expert freelancers. We are also the first decentralized freelancer community hosted by the Hashgraph Hedera. We are continuously trying to improve and update our website for our users, adding features and additional services to enhance their experience.

If you have any questions about our operations, please visit our About section or contact us directly.

GoMint Integration for N2

We love the result. And you?

So, we decided to integrate the WordPress plugin GoMint which uses the Hedera API to display these NFTs. During its integration, we encountered some minor difficulties, such as website caching management. Indeed, the new NFTs were not immediately visible due to two levels of caching. We wanted to display the most recent NFTs as soon as they were created. Fortunately, Alex Taylor, the co-founder of GoMint, personally came to our aid and assisted us in the complete installation of this plugin.

The GoMint plugin allows WordPress sites to easily display the details of any Hedera NFT collection. This technology also simplifies several complex API calls into one and manages the IPFS cache to ensure that the most up-to-date information is displayed.

If you would like to know more about GoMint and their project, visit their website: https://www.gomint.co/.

We would like to thank Alex Taylor and his colleagues again for their assistance and support. We also invite you to contact him if you want to benefit from a service to display your Hedera NFTs on your WordPress site.

To conclude, I was delighted to participate in this integration project. I am convinced that the result, both on mobile and on desktop, will please our current and future users. We hope that this will allow them to navigate our website more easily and to enjoy the additional services we offer, while staying informed and connected to the N2 community.

And you? What do you think of the result?
